Book Club
Recently a couple of my girl friends and I started a book club on Tuesday mornings in order to "stimulate" our brains with more than just gossip. We were getting together and just catching up, but then decided it was high time we did something intellectual! So, we are trying to read one book a week and then get together to chat about it and anything else that may come up. :) We have each chosen a book to read and now it is back to my turn. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good book that is not too long, but that is reading and conversation worthy. So far, we have read Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor, Glass Castle, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Thanks for any ideas you may have! Have a great weekend!

The Handmaid's Tale or anything else not too long by Margaret Attwood.
Your blog is so fun, I love it. I find that blogging comes and goes. Sometimes I have 100 things to post and then all of the sudden I've got nothing. Lately, I'm really reaching. I can't wait for Thanksgiving so I can blog about all of the fun we have.
i say read 'my life as a fake' so that you can all discuss it and tell me what the hell happens at the end. seriously, it is a fascinating book, but i can't figure it out. the wife and i had a long discussion about it, but still couldn't make sense of it. it's peter carey, a great storyteller whose books read quick.
I just started reading The Alchemist because I heard so many people talking about it and listing it as one of their favorite books on MySpace/Facebook. I'm only about 40 pages into it, but it's going fast and it's good so far. It's not too long and should be a quick read. It's about following your dreams :)
Read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Alchemist_(book)
I say read porn. Think of how much you girls can discuss?
Just teasing. A friend of mine just had her second book published...they are funny...first one is Bitter is the New Black (a cross between The Devil Wears Prada & Sex In the City) the second one is Bright Lights, Big Ass. I kid you not. The first one is great...short read, nothing intellectual whatsoever. It's just one woman's life story.
I don't know what you read in high school, but I liked The Count of Monte Cristo and Things Fall Apart. My Antonia by Willa Cather is a classic that I've liked since I was young. Love in the Time of Cholera looks like it might be interesting... But I like TC's suggestion of porn. You could turn it into a symposium ;o) Das Parfum (the original version) by Patrick Suskind, translated to English as "Perfume: The Story of a Murder." We watched the movie with Dustin Hoffman -- the movie is so so but I think the book might be a good read. (go to wikipedia and look it up, it was Kurt Cobain's fav book!) Take care!
Oooo, the Count of Monte Cristo is excellent!!! Such good selections.
BTW, did my husband acctually write "the wife and I"?!!
Thanks everybody! These are all excellent ideas...it will be hard to choose! I;ll keep you all updated. Ps...Tc, unfortunately I think porn is out as an option, but I'll throw it out to the girls :)
Here's a link to that book by my music friend in New Orleans we talked about: http://www.amazon.com/Choose-Brian-Perry/dp/0970693303
Good post.
I just finished reading Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom. It's a bit of a tear-jerker, but definately a good read! So good in fact, I was able to read half of it while I stood in line for two hours waiting to vote! http://www.amazon.com/Tuesdays-Morrie-Young-Greatest-Lesson/dp/0385484518
